Award-winning singer-songwriter Pascuala Ilabaca and her band Fauna will play a free concert at the Santa Fe Plaza on the evening of Thursday, July 12, 2018
Santa Fe, New Mexico—Chilean singer-songwriter Pascuala Ilabaca and her band Fauna will perform a free concert at the Santa Fe Plaza during the International Folk Art Market’s Community Celebration and Artist Procession on Thursday, July 12, 2018. The annual Artists’ Procession and Concert will take place from 5:30 to 8:45pm and feature more than one hundred Market artists. A colorful kickoff to the International Folk Art Market, now in its 15th year, the procession will be led by Honorary Chair and Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
Ilabaca’s passionate performance style and unique blend of musical influences has placed her at the forefront of Chile’s music scene. While Ilabaca’s vocal delivery and lyrics have roots in traditional South American sounds, she also injects broad global references—from jazz, rock, and even rhythms influenced by time spent in India. On stage, Ilabaca’s commanding presence is bolstered by the multi-layered, dynamic melodies of her band, Fauna. The band features Juan Muñoz on guitar, Christian Chiang on bass, Jamie Frez on percussion, and Miguel Razzouk on saxophone and clarinet.
From an early age, Ilabaca, who was born in Valparaíso in 1985, was interested in music. In her debut album “Pascuala Canta a Violeta” (2008), full of songs based on Chilean folklore, she incorporated a Hindu table and electric guitars. The powerful beauty of this album –produced when Ilabaca was in her early twenties, persuaded the then-President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, to invite the musician to India, where Ilabaca had lived as a child.
With a focus on expanding the possibilities of her musical style, Ilabaca spent a year in India, delving deeply into its storied sounds and rhythms. The experience resulted in two albums, both released in 2010. Also in 2010, Ilabaca won the Guitarpin de Oro from the Festival Huaso de Olmué and the Audience Award for Best Chilean Videoclip for “Lamenta la Canela.” In 2011, Pascuala Ilabaca embarked on a European tour, performing a total of twenty times across Spain, France Germany, and Belgium. She also performed in Argentina and Mexico and participated in the Anniversary Concert for Violeta Parra, held at the Municipal Theatre of Valparaíso. Numerous appearances and accolades have since followed, including presentations at Berlin’s Philharmonic Orchestra, Chile’s Lollapalooza Festival, and dozens of appearances across Europe and the Americas. At The 14th Annual Independent Music Awards in 2015, Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna won the award in the “Tribute Album” category for “Me Saco El Sombrero.” Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna continue to travel and perform extensively.
In addition to the free performance at the Santa Fe Plaza on Thursday, July 12, Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna will be kicking off The International Folk Art Market’s opening night celebration on Friday, July 13 on Museum Hill.
